[edit] Information

Meet the real-life airmen who inspired "Masters of the Air" as they share the harrowing and transformative events of the 100th Bomb Group. "The Bloody Hundredth" is a new documentary that honors the real-life heroes of the 100th Bomb Group. Narrated by Tom Hanks, the hour-long documentary spotlights the true stories of several characters and real-life airmen featured in "Masters of the Air." Stationed in Norfolk for the last two years of the war, the 100th carried out bombing raids on key infrastructure in occupied Europe and Germany itself, taking massive casualties as the Nazis' air defences fired back. The men who flew, as pilots, navigators and bombardiers, in many cases, ended up as prisoners of war. Their account of that misery is one of the more compelling aspects of "The Bloody Hundredth," as are the statistics—who died, when, and in what numbers. The point of the 100th being in eastern England beginning in 1943—and flying missions against factories and rail yards in Germany—was not just to destroy infrastructure and resources but to deplete Nazi airpower in advance of the D-Day invasion of June 1944. The effective yet calamitous Munster raid of Oct. 10, 1943, for instance, betrays why the group was called "bloody." From the shock of Pearl Harbor to the joy of VE Day, "The Bloody Hundredth" is a record of what was endured and achieved by a group of young Americans when their country and the world needed them most.
